18th February 2011

Ah, my birthday, 50 today, eek!

The number does not really worry me, not much anyway!! I still feel young most of the time, a few more aches and pains, but I think  it is our mental attitude that matters. I love doing new things, what is the point in doing the same old thing day after day, try a new food, read a different style of book, go to a different place you have never been to before, make a new friend, don't get me wrong I love routine and I find I need routine but we can become bored with life if we stay doing the same things.

There is one thing I have not been able to do for a long time and that is drive, I lost my confidence in driving and fear it immensely, I am not sure if it is something I can get over, I rely on lifts and public transport, not always convenient but that is the choice I make at the moment. So maybe my challenge for my 50th year is to give it a go again, I will let you know when I am going to do it so you can stay off the road! Just kidding!

I had a lovely day today, I am still in Bournemouth of course so I will not see Richard today but I have my lovely family here and they gave me a wonderful day. I came downstairs into the lounge, Helen had put up the birthday banner I had made for George's birthday. There were pink balloons put up and a pile of pressies on the settee! George thought they were for him which was sad for him but he has to learn that it is not always about him.

Helen and Andy gave me a beautiful Pandora bracelet and George and Harry gave me a little elephant charm to go on it. I have collected elephants for many years and have numerous elephant ornaments given to me for birthdays and christmases, but they have stopped now at my request, but a beautiful silver elephant charm is wonderful and the fact it is from my grandsons makes it even more special, I am very blessed.

Andy cooked us breakfast and we had scrambled eggs with smoked salmon on toast, croissants and chocolate pains, orange juice and toast and marmalade, a fantastic breakfast for a birthday girl!

Helen pretended to be taking me to Sainsbury's to get some shopping, but actually we were heading to Christchurch, I knew something must be going on but was not sure, I thought maybe she had to collect something for the kids or Andy. We arrived at a ceramic shop where you can paint your own design on whatever you choose such as a vase, plate or mug etc. Helen and I chose to do a mug each.

We sat down with a lovely coffee, our mug and some paints we got started. Unfortunately the shop owners ipod was not available that day so there was no music to listen to, but we were so absorbed we did not really notice. I took ages deciding my design, I wanted to do something with land art in mind and painted the land art sunwheel design created by Richard. It is one of my favourites.

I will take a photo of my mug to show you, I ran out of time doing my mug, it was time consuming and took more effort than I realised, but I still enjoyed doing it and would like to do more art on pottery etc. Helen's mug was great, she made it for Andy and did a finger print or two of  skeletons. I will try and get a photo of that too.

After we left the shop we met Andy and the boys and Andy's mum and dad Diane and Keith at Harvester's. I was not sure what to expect at this pub as it is a chain of pubs and have not been impressed with other chain pubs, but I was very pleasantly surprised and would not hesitate to go back. I ordered a vegetarian pasta dish which was delicious. The boys behaved mostly, in fact Harry was the most annoying because he has developed this scream that he does very loudly if he wants attention, hopefully he will grow out that one soon!

Helen had got me a birthday cake, the sponge variety which I love, actually I love most cakes!! I always feel embarressed when there is a cake presented and I get sung Happy Birthday, but I really wouldn't have it any other way, it's not always about us is it, the loved ones who want to do something for you have as much rights in doing something nice for you whether you feel a bit embaressed or not, hopefully you get my drift!

Well there has been a lot going on as you can tell from this post. To cut it short we had pizza for tea and then bed. I had a great day.
